Sean Esteban McCabe, PhD

Sean Esteban McCabe, PhD, is the Carol J. Boyd Collegiate Professor and Director of the University of Michigan Center for the Study of Drugs, Alcohol, Smoking and Health. Dr. McCabe has secured over $60 million in federal funding as the principal investigator of 15 FDA and NIH grants. He has published over 325 peer-reviewed manuscripts, including in JAMA, and received several prestigious awards including the 2024 Betty Ford Award. He has expertise treating substance use disorders and facilitates a bereavement group for adolescents who have experienced parental death by drug overdose, suicide, homicide and other causes. He co-leads HopeHQ™, a multidisciplinary initiative conducting cutting-edge research and offering technical assistance to help children impacted by their parents’ drug overdose death thrive through evidence-based services. His work shapes clinical practice, federal policy, and mentorship for future substance use scholars. Dr. McCabe widely disseminates findings via major media outlets including live on CNN.
