According to a recently released report from the The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, districts and schools should consider a coordinated and comprehensive strategy to mitigate potential emotional, mental and behavioral harm to students and school staff when considering the implementation of active shooter drills as part of a school safety plan. The report was drafted by the Committee on the Impact of Active Shooter Drills on Student Health and Well-being, which was sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education.
