This was one of the recommendations made by the non-profit Sandy Hook Promise, an organization formed by people who lost family members in the 2012 Connecticut mass shooting. Sandy Hook Promise chief program officer Crystal Brown-Garrant said that Georgia joins several states that have now mandated schools to provide such reporting systems.

Justin Heinze, Director of the School Safety Section at the University of Michigan’s Institute for Firearm Injury Prevention, said that both the frequency and severity of school shootings have been on the rise in recent years, and he added that bullying is still often a precipitating factor when it comes to school violence.
