Disruptive Camouflage
This collaborative and interdisciplinary project focuses on researching and raising awareness of issues related to women, gender, and sexuality and how to counter the aggressive masculinity of rural gun culture through art making.
Abstract
Hunting camouflage is a big part of gun culture in rural areas. The camo meant to render a person invisible while hunting has become a fashion statement to show off one’s masculinity and dominance over nature. I subvert hunting camo by embroidering onto it and combining it with stereotypically feminine florals. I will obfuscate the aggressively masculine aesthetic of hunting camo by using my altered camos to make clothing and home goods and skin a deactivated gun. I will photograph the items using models of all genders, exhibit the photographs with the artifacts, and write about the project.
