Stephen Oliphant
Research Investigator, Institute for Firearm Injury Prevention
Dr. Oliphant is a Research Investigator at the University of Michigan Institute for Firearm Injury Prevention. He earned a master’s in public policy and certificate in injury science from the University of Michigan and a PhD in criminal justice from Michigan State University. He recently completed a T32 postdoctoral research fellowship at the Institute for Firearm Injury Prevention.
Dr. Oliphant’s research is focused on understanding the impacts of firearm laws and social policies on self-harm and interpersonal firearm injury. His recent work includes analyses of a handgun purchase waiting period repeal, purchaser licensing laws, firearm relinquishment policies, and child access prevention laws. The overarching goal of his work is to inform firearm injury prevention strategies and policy solutions that are equitable and effective. Dr. Oliphant works with the Michigan Firearm Law Implementation Program and will assist with the evaluation of Michigan’s extreme risk protection order (ERPO) law.
