Michigan Firearm Law Implementation Program (M-FLIP)

Institute Project
Outline of State of Missouri

The University of Michigan Institute for Firearm Injury Prevention will support implementation of extreme risk protection order (ERPO) policies and protocols statewide through the Michigan Firearm Law Implementation Program (M-FLIP). M-FLIP will form a state advisory board, conduct a comprehensive needs assessment, provide training and technical assistance, host a statewide conference, and disseminate evidence-based tools and resources to law enforcement agencies, healthcare networks, schools and school districts, community violence intervention (CVI) organizations, and victim advocacy groups across Michigan. M-FLIP will also conduct a continuous study of the use of Michigan’s ERPO law as well as host a statewide survey of firearm owners in the state of Michigan.

Abstract

The Michigan Firearm Law Implementation Program (M-FLIP), housed at the University of Michigan Institute for Firearm Injury Prevention, is funded by the State of Michigan to provide free and tailored guidance, training, and technical assistance (TA) in developing appropriate extreme risk protection order (ERPO) programs. In addition to trainings for organizations that implement the ERPO law or educate others about it, we also provide publicly available information and resources on the Michigan ERPO and secure storage laws.

Our Training and Technical Assistance

Identify — We can assist you in identifying your organization’s needs, build a training and technical assistance plan, and strategize for long-term success.

Develop — M-FLIP creates customized trainings and resources that tailor to your organizational needs, size, and capacity. We can help strengthen your existing public-facing information, training documents, ERPO protocols, and any other materials related to Michigan’s firearm safety laws.

Evaluate — Our support doesn’t end once your initial needs are met. We will check in with you moving forward to see how your ERPO or secure storage programs are progressing, provide additional assistance if requested, and answer any questions you have along the way.

Connect — M-FLIP seeks to build bridges between organizations implementing firearm safety laws. We can connect you with organizations doing similar work, organize communities of practice among ERPO and secure storage implementers, and help to share your work with communities local to you or across Michigan.
